Meta Relaxes Sanctions on Trump for Facebook and Instagram Violations, Citing Equal Opportunity for Presidential Candidates

Meta has decided to ease the sanctions on former US President Donald Trump if he violates the rules on Facebook and Instagram. The tech company believes that it is important for all US presidential candidates to be able to express their views equally on its social media platforms.

"Given our commitment to supporting political discourse, we feel that the American people should have equal opportunity to hear from presidential candidates," stated Meta in a recent announcement. Since Trump has been named as the Republican candidate, Meta has lifted the stricter sanctions previously imposed on him. These sanctions were considered to be a response to 'extreme and unusual circumstances' and had not been implemented before. Moving forward, Trump will face the same consequences as any other user if he violates the terms of use on Facebook and Instagram. In the past, he would have received a suspension ranging from one month to two years, depending on the severity of the violation.

The stricter sanctions were put in place in early 2023 when Trump regained access to his Facebook and Instagram accounts. He had been banned from these platforms in 2021 following controversial posts related to the US Capitol riot. While he now regularly posts on Facebook and Instagram, he remains inactive on Twitter. Instead, he has been using his own social media platform, Truth Social, as an alternative.
