Dating app Grindr has been ordered to pay a hefty fine of 5.7 million euros for breaching privacy laws. The Norwegian privacy regulator issued the fine in 2021, which Grindr initially appealed. However, the company's appeal has now been overturned.

Grindr was found to have shared user data with third parties for marketing purposes between 2018 and 2020. This data included sensitive information such as location data, IP addresses, age, and gender. While users had agreed to the collection of this data when using the app, they did not consent to it being shared with advertisers.

The regulator determined that Grindr had violated the General Data Protection Regulation, leading to the imposition of a fine of 6.3 million euros in 2021. Grindr's appeal was unsuccessful, and on Monday, the court upheld the decision that the company must pay the fine. The AFP news agency reported on this development after obtaining access to the court ruling.
