Potential Dangers of Consuming Seafood: New Study Reveals Presence of Forever Chemicals

In recent news, researchers from Dartmouth College in the UK have shed light on the potential dangers of consuming seafood. While seafood such as lobsters, shrimp, tuna, and more are known for being sources of lean protein and omega fatty acids, a study has found that they may also contain "forever chemicals" known as per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

The study, led by Associate Professor of Epidemiology Megan Romano, examined 26 different types of PFAS in popular marine species like cod, haddock, lobster, salmon, scallops, shrimp, and tuna.

The findings revealed that shrimp and lobster had the highest concentrations of PFAS among the seafood studied, with specific chemicals present at average levels of 1.74 and 3.30 nanograms per gram of meat, respectively.

These PFAS compounds are known for their slow degradation over time, posing a significant risk to both human health and the environment. Despite guidelines for safe seafood consumption regarding contaminants like mercury, there are currently no specific guidelines for PFAS in seafood.
